Making a Modified Cloze Selection

1. Extract a selection from any reading material (basal, literature, content,

newspaper)

2. Keep first and last sentences intact.

3. Choose 250-300 words.

4. Leave blanks same size - different places to require students to use different skills.

a. Filled by reading up to blank (all information before has provided clues).

b. Filled by reading onward (must read after blank to get to clues).

c. Filled by rereading both directions to tie together (clues before and after blank).

5. Place choices on the side - like DRP. (All choices must fit grammatically).

Decide on foils. (Make a cloze passage and gather responses made by students to make foils).

6. Program easy - hard
- by number of choices (give 2 responses - one right and one wrong, then increase number of choices)

- by similarity of choices (foils that are close refine vocabulary knowledge).
