About the Connecticut Mastery Test
(CMT)

Position Statement on Measuring Success
Adopted by the Connecticut State Board of Education

Excerpts:

Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) and Connecticut Academic Performance Test(CAPT) results provide important information about student performance on a selected set of skills and competencies in mathematics, reading and writing in Grades 4, 6 and 8, and also science in Grade 10. However, these results do not provide a comprehensive picture of student accomplishments.

Defining standards, measuring success and reporting the results are
important steps in the process of improving education. However, the most important step is using this information to make good decisions about adjusting curriculums, improving teaching, designing new programs and providing more specific and more effective instruction for each student.

The CMT Language Arts consists of the Reading and Writing Tests.

The Reading Test includes a DRP test and a comprehension test.

The Writing Test has two components: Composing/Revising and Editing.

The Language Arts section of the 10th grade CAPT consists of three components: Response to Literature, Interdisciplinary and Editing.
