Mary Hooker Elementary School
Mary Hooker is where most of the Charter Oak
Terrace children go to school. On the one hand, the school has a
principal and vice principal who are dedicated, incredibly hard
working and committed to stopping the generational dependency
found in Public Housing today. On the other hand, Mary Hooker
students rank among the lowest in CT on the State mastery tests.
Principal Richard Montanez and his staff are
active members of the COLC. They recognize that the Campus of
Learners has the potential of assisting the elementary school to
achieve its goals. Computers have been selectively installed, and
teachers are integrating them in their course work. There are
advanced plans for converting Mary Hooker into a modified magnet
school with 4 academies which allow parents and children to
choose.
Additionally, L.E.A.P. works closely with
Mary Hooker. Afternoon conferences are scheduled with the
L.E.A.P. counselors, teachers and parents. Progress reports are
shared in an effort to bring an integration between the school
environment and the living environment.
