Paraiba is a small state on the northeastern coast of Brazil, and includes the easternmost point on the continent of Latin America. While it has many miles of gorgeous coastline (see tourism photos), the vast majority of the state is inland, and consists of semi-arid farmland. In recent years this state has been one of the areas seriously hit by the long drought affecting farming, drinking water and depleting food supplies throughout the region. The
Paraiba chapter works primarily, though not exclusively, in the capital city of Joao
Pessoa, and works to provide basic health care needs to disadvantaged populations through
outreach projects into the local favellas (ghettos), maternal health care education for
impoverished women, domestic violence response training for aspiring social workers, and a
